Almost nothing written about what you are buying when you commission one.

The two are not the same document. A player wants to know how transfers work. A publisher needs to know that the transfer rule is a retention mechanism, that changing it changes engagement, and that somebody has to administer it thirty-eight times.

This is that second document.

The thing you are buying is a habit, not a game

A predictor gets someone to come back on a Saturday. A bracket gets them for a tournament. A season-long game gets them every week for ten months, and it does that because the squad they picked in August is still theirs in March.

That is the entire commercial proposition. Ownership creates return. Everything else in this piece exists to protect it.

The scale it reaches when it works: in one season-long league we ran, 5,215,699 managers entered. In the weekly contest alongside it, 4,864,173 players took part across ten consecutive weeks and 74 matches. Two different contests and two different populations, stated separately because they measure different things. What both numbers show is a format that holds people for months rather than moments.

The mechanics, and what each one is actually for

Every rule below looks like a game design decision. Each one is a retention or monetisation decision wearing game clothes.

Squad selection under a budget. Fifteen players, a fixed budget, a limit on players from any single club. The budget is what makes the game a puzzle rather than a popularity contest, and the club limit is what stops every squad looking identical. Identical squads kill leaderboards, because nobody can distinguish themselves.

Transfers, with a penalty. One or two free transfers a week, then a points deduction for each extra. Named precisely: two free transfers, minus four points per additional transfer. The free transfer is the reason to open the app midweek. The penalty is the reason the decision feels like it costs something. Remove the penalty and you remove the tension; make it too harsh and casual players disengage after one bad week.

Captaincy. One player scores double. It is the single cheapest engagement mechanic in the format – one tap, before every deadline, with a real consequence. It is also the most-discussed decision of the week, which is what makes it sponsorable.

Chips and boosters. A limited set of one-use advantages across a season – a double-captain week, a week where bench points count, a free transfer round. They exist to give a losing manager a reason to stay. A player twelve thousand places down the table has nothing to play for unless they still hold something nobody else has spent.

Deadlines. A hard lock before the first match of each round. The deadline is what converts a game into an appointment, and appointments are what a sponsor is buying when they take a gameweek moment.

Bench and auto-substitution. Players who do not play get replaced automatically. Unglamorous, and it is the difference between a casual manager scoring zero on a busy weekend and staying in the game. Auto-substitution is a churn control.

Scoring. Goals, assists, clean sheets, minutes, cards, bonus. The weighting is a product decision that shapes behaviour: weight goals heavily and everyone picks forwards; weight clean sheets and defenders matter. There is no neutral scoring model. Yours will produce a squad profile whether you designed it to or not.

Private leagues are the growth engine, and they are usually underbuilt

The strongest acquisition mechanic in a season-long game is not a marketing campaign. It is one person creating a league and inviting their colleagues.

Every invited player registers on your property, arrives with an existing social reason to keep playing, and stays engaged past the point where they would otherwise drift, because the competition is against people they know rather than a global table they will never reach the top of.

Three things decide whether that loop works. Whether an invite link opens directly on the join screen with the league already identified. Whether joining requires a separate registration or inherits your existing sign-on. And whether the league has enough structure – a table, a head-to-head option, a season prize – to feel like a competition rather than a filter on a leaderboard.

Any one of the three broken, and the loop stops. It is the cheapest audience growth available in this format and it is the part most commonly delivered as an afterthought.

What changes with the competition you choose

The mechanics are stable. The operating shape is not.

A thirty-eight-round league gives you a long, even season and a predictable weekly rhythm. A short domestic competition gives you fewer rounds, so each one carries more weight and a single scoring error is proportionally more damaging. A tournament compresses everything: group stages with matches on consecutive days, then knockouts where squads need rules for eliminated players.

The commercial consequence: a longer competition is worth more to a sponsor and costs more to operate. Ten months of inventory against three weeks. That trade-off should be made deliberately at scoping, not discovered in the first season.

What most quotes leave out

Three things, consistently.

The season, as opposed to the build. A fantasy platform is not delivered, it is run – deadlines set every round, scores reconciled against a live feed, points recalculated when official statistics are corrected after a match, and players supported while they are playing. That is a ten-month operation with a shape, and it is the part that decides whether the game is still credible in March. It has its own piece: managed game operations.

The sports data feed. Scoring runs on licensed data and it is a real line item. It is frequently priced separately or assumed away entirely. Ask any vendor directly whether it is inside their number.

Where the game lives. A game on your own domain accrues search authority to you, keeps your analytics intact, and lets your consent framework govern it. A game on someone else's domain does none of that. Embedding it inside your existing site is a decision with consequences well beyond integration effort.

Who should not buy this

If your audience engages in bursts rather than habits, season-long is the wrong format. A publisher whose traffic spikes around individual events and flattens between them will get a strong first gameweek and a thin November. A predictor or a bracket fits that audience better and costs less to run.

If you cannot commit to the whole season, do not start one. The failure that damages a brand is not a game that never launches. It is a game that launches, is left unattended, and visibly degrades in front of the people who signed up for ten months. Publishers have killed season-long games after years of operation, and their audiences noticed.

And if you want a game live for a competition starting in three weeks, season-long is the harder ask. It can be done – we build in weeks rather than quarters – but a shorter format launched well beats a long one launched badly.

The questions worth asking before you commission one

What is our audience's engagement pattern – habitual or event-driven? Which competition, and does its length match the commitment we can make? What does the scoring model reward, and is that the squad behaviour we want? Does the invite loop work end to end, including on mobile? Who runs the season once it is live? And is the data feed inside the quote or outside it?

A vendor who has operated a season answers all six from experience. A vendor who has built one answers the first three.

Next: if you are deciding between licensing a platform and building one, white-label vs custom fantasy sports platforms is the piece to read first. If the format above is heavier than your audience wants, the shorter formats are a genuine alternative rather than a consolation.

Or: thirty minutes and we will show you a season-long game running rather than describe one.

There is plenty written about how to play fantasy football.
